Why won't my imac play dvds?

When i first got my mac about a year ago it used to play all the dvds i had in my room, but now when i put one in it just spits in back out again, no applications load up like 'dvdplayer' and these dvds are not pirate copies they are the same ones that i watched before on my mac, any ideas? ?
