Can I play Left 4 Dead 2 pirate copy with Steam players with original game?

My friends are gonna buy it and I'd buy it but if I can get it for free (which I can) then not worth the money but I want to know if I can play with my friends who will have the original game bought from Steam. So will I be able to? Is it like Counter-Strike where I can make a server and they can join buy I can't join Steam servers or whatever?
